Pennsylvania DOT Urges Motorists to Travel With Caution During Winter Weather Events

With a National Weather Service freezing rain advisory in effect for parts of the District 1 region, PennDOT is urging motorists to travel with caution.

Weather conditions can change quickly. Drivers should beware of roads that may look wet, but are actually frozen.

If travel is necessary during winter weather, motorists should be prepared to slow down, increase following distances and use extra caution on bridges and ramps. State law requires that headlights be turned on whenever windshield wipers are being used.

PennDOT also reminds motorists not to drive through standing water on roads.

DelDOT Suspends Lane Closures for the Holidays

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) reminds drivers to expect extra traffic in Delaware starting as early as Monday, December 21. Planned lane closures on Delaware’s multi-lane highways will be suspended at midnight on Thursday, December 24, and will resume at midnight on Monday, December 28. Traffic accidents and other unpredictable types of transportation incidents may cause lane closures and/or delays.

The warmer than normal temperatures forecast for the holidays means more pedestrians and bicyclists will likely be interacting with traffic this year. Motorists are asked to be on the lookout for both. Pedestrians are reminded to use designated sidewalks and marked road crossings; and bicyclists are reminded to use bike paths and lanes where available. Both should wear bright clothing and use a light, if out during night or low light conditions.

DelDOT’s Transportation Management Center (TMC) will monitor and adjust computerized traffic sign

NHDOT and NH State Police Urge Drivers To Prepare For Winter Conditions

Concerned that mild weather has lulled motorists, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation and New Hampshire State Police today urged drivers to prepare for winter driving conditions across the state.

Joined by AAA of Northern England and the NH Towing Association, NHDOT and State Police said winter weather has arrived in parts of New Hampshire and snow and ice conditions demand a significant change in driving practices.

“The Department of Transportation is ready for winter to arrive,” said NHDOT Assistant Director of Operations David Rodrigue. “Our snow fighters are prepared, salt and sand sheds are full, and our state roads will be maintained by over 700 state and private plow trucks this winter. Don’t crowd the plow and remember the road surface is better where treated behind that plow. Four wheel drive does not mean four wheel stop, and avoid using cruise control in winter weather conditions.”

Last winter 28 NHDOT plow trucks and 21 State Pol

CALTRANS and CHP Prepared for Upcoming Winter Fog Season

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) encourage motorists to prepare for fog and reduced-visibility driving conditions on local roads and highways throughout the Central Valley.

Driving in winter weather — snow, ice, hail, fog, wet and cold — creates a greater challenge for vehicles and drivers. Keeping your vehicle in good technical repair and reducing driving speeds reduces your overall chances for any mishap or disaster while driving.

The fog/winter driving season in the Central Valley typically begins during the month of November and continues through February. Tule fog accounts for more weather-related automotive casualties in California than any other weather condition.

To assist in slowing traffic speeds when visibility is less than 500 feet, the CHP will implement their Pace Program on major highways between Bakersfield and Modesto. Caltrans and the CHP want you to get to your
